How Amadeus keeps travellers moving
Amadeus is based on an online transaction processing system which is capable of handling 20,000 transactions per second.
"Moving from a legacy mainframe environment to open systems has enabled us to leverage all of the advantages of running a distributed, service oriented architecture to support the rich product set that we offer today," says Gerry Smith, vice president of operations at Amadeus.
The company provides thousands of interfaces to and from the outside world to support global ticket distribution. Historically, it provided an API for its customers based on an EDIFACT, electronic message exchange format for communicating with the Amadeus system. Smith says: "These days we offer XML web services interfaces, which is pretty much what everyone uses."
