European unemployment on the increase

The economic downturn has disproportionately affected Europe’s youth with unemployment among 15-24 year-olds increasing by 50% since the onset of the economic crisis. At the same time 4 million jobs are vacant across the EU due to a mismatch between the skills of the unemployed and the skills required for available jobs.

“Investment in IT skills, equipment and networks drives about half the productivity growth in Europe,” said Neelie Kroes, VP of the European Commission in charge of the Digital Econom.” Without the necessary number of well-skilled employees this sector will not remain competitive. So there is a pressing need to start filling the pipe-line.”
