HMRC’s IT Transformation Programme

Simplifying HMRC’s IT

HMRC embarked on project Aurora, a huge programme to replace hundreds of customised IT applications with off-the-shelf packages.

By moving applications from customised platforms to up-to-date, standardised, software, Pavitt has been able to make savings in IT running costs, benefiting both HMRC and its suppliers.

HMRC is using the savings from one migration to plough back into the next project, effectively making Aurora self-financing.

“Here we are one year on today, not only have I not spent £145 million, but by the end of next year, 2013, when we have completed this project, we will have modernised every single application, on brand new infrastructure, for an investment cost of zero,” said Pavitt.
