Openreach expands fibre to 114 more exchanges

BT Openreach has unveiled 114 exchanges that will be upgraded to deliver fibre broadband as part of its plan to deliver fibre to two-thirds of the UK by the end of 2015.

BT Openreach has unveiled 114 further exchanges that will be upgraded to deliver fibre broadband as part of its plan to deliver fibre to two-thirds of the UK by the end of 2015.

BT said the majority of the roll-out will be based on fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) technology, which currently offers download speeds of up to 40Mbps and upstream speeds of 10Mbps. Openreach expects to double these speeds during 2012. Fibre to the premise (FTTP) technology will also be deployed delivering initial speeds of up to 100Mbps.

Mike Galvin, Openreach managing director for Next Generation Access, said: "We believe the government's support makes it possible to get fibre to 90% of homes so we will be engaging with Broadband Delivery UK and local councils to offer our help and expertise."
