Twitter uses Acquia to provide Drupal-based development community site

Twitter has launched a new developer community site using open source content management system (CMS) Drupal, provided by Acquia.

Twitter used Acquia's products, cloud infrastructure and support services with the free Drupal CMS to create a new site to support 750,000 developers.

Twitter's developer site, dev.twitter.com, provides documents, APIs, tips and tutorials, as well as a blog and forum platform.

"Twitter has always been deeply supportive of open source efforts like Drupal," said Ryan Sarver, Twitter's director of platform.

"We made the decision to go with Acquia and Drupal for our new dev.twitter.com site because of the customisation and flexibility," he added.

Acquia CEO Tom Erickson said: "We are proud to be working with Twitter on this important effort. It reinforces that Drupal is truly a best-of-breed platform for community websites."

Acquia was co-founded by Drupal's creator in 2007.

Twitter also announced more than one million applications have now been created using the Twitter API. Since December 2010, more than $1bn has been paid out in acquisitions.

"This is up from 150,000 apps just a year ago. A new app is registered every 1.5 seconds, fuelling a spike in ecosystem growth in the areas of analytics, curation and publisher tools," a Twitter spokesman said in a blog post.

"This level of investment is indicative of the opportunity for developers and entrepreneurs to build successful businesses as part of the Twitter platform," said Twitter.

Bloomberg recently reported that the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is conducting preliminary investigations into Twitter's business practices after receiving complaints about some software development processes.
