"The availability of the Windows Embedded Compact 7 platform marks 15 years of Microsoft's embedded leadership, which started with Windows Embedded CE, a real-time operating system for a wide range of small-footprint consumer and enterprise devices," said Dan Javnozon, a group manager for Windows Embedded at Microsoft, in a blog post.

OEMs such as HP and Wyse Technology are using Windows Embedded Compact 7 for cloud-based, thin client devices. Windows Embedded Compact 7 also supports the latest ARM architecture and provides resources for developers using Microsoft's Silverlight.

Steve Ballmer announced in 2010 that an updated Windows Embedded Handheld platform based on Windows 7 technologies will be released in the second half of 2011, offering enhanced features and functionality to meet the needs of networked enterprise devices.
